A few months back, my friends got me into Clash of Clans. It was ok, but I never really got really into the 'sit and wait' style of online play. I prefer action, and some single player options. I more recently stumbled upon Boom Beach. What a breath of fresh air!
Boom beach is a combat strategy game, available both on iOS and Android (and there are ways of playing it on PC as well) . The graphics and gameplay are somewhat similar to various other games on the market, but the real difference is that there is artificial intelligence and single player missions. This was a major factor to my gameplay as I don't enjoy having to be online 100% of the time to get gameplay in.
Most of all, this game is playable at work without a data connection! Clash of clans is not available on my company's network, and I don't get reliable enough cellular reception to play it otherwise. This is a big selling point for me, and kept me playing, although you will of course still need to download regular updates.
Without going into too much detail, there is a wide array of units & structures. There are defensive buildings, economy buildings, headquarters, support buildings, and troops. Troops also break off into various categories - Rifleman, heavy, zooka, warrior, tank, and medic. The class system really keeps things interesting, and the combat is fast-paced enough to stay entertaining while not getting too tedious too quickly. My favorite class to play with is a combination of the heavy and medics. I've always liked healing in games, and it's nice that there is actual healing in combat in Boom Beach. I really like the heavy troops in the front soaking up all the damage and protecting my medics, and the medics keeping them alive from behind the support line that the heavies are holding. There are obviously various other (and likely better) strategies for conquering the different levels in the campaign and skirmish against the AI.
It's worth noting that the pay model is quite like a lot of other free-to-play games right now. Mostly, you pay for cosmetics, and the ability to speed things up. It's nice to contribute for the developers' hard work, but I've never been a fan of the 'pay to not play' model - Meaning you spend money so you can win the game faster.
